When to visit

You can visit Mexico at almost any time of year as the weather tends to be good year round. Peak holiday times  for international travellers are between July and August, so you are probably better off travelling off-peak, and try to avoid going during hurricane season, which is between late August and October. This makes the days between November and May the best times to travel.

1. The food

It is no secret that this country’s food is delicious. But no “Mexican” restaurant abroad ever compares to the explosion of flavours that is real Mexican cuisine. And it is certainly not all tacos and mezcal (although they are delicious). The culinary traditions vary wildly as you move from north to south, but one thing always remains true: the ingredients are always incredibly fresh. Whether you decide to have seafood on the Pacific coast of Sinaloa or Mayan sopa de lima in the Yucatán Peninsula, or you fill up on local avocados and fresh fruit, there is always an option for everyone. But beware: never order the spicy version of a dish, as Mexican spice is on another level compared to most other countries!

2. The people

The people in Mexico are so incredibly welcoming and friendly, you’ll feel right at home. When you need anything, they are always willing to help, whether that is directions or advice on the best local food spots. Prepare a few words of Spanish, and they will love you even more.

3. The beaches

The beaches in Mexico are among some of the most beautiful in the world, due to their white sand and crystal clear warm waters. If you are the type of traveller who enjoys a cocktail at the beach, then Mexico is definitely the holiday destination for you! If not, you can whale watch, surf or snorkel instead.

4. The history

If you love history and archeology, Mexico is definitely the right destination for you. The country is filled with world-class archeological sites like Chichén Itzá (pictured above), Teotihuacán or Guachimontones. Make sure to visit at least one of these while you’re there, as the atmosphere around those areas is truly unique and there is so much to learn. Alternatively, head to Oxaca or Chihuahua where you can explore Spanish colonial history or go to the Museo Nacional de Antropología where you can get a full history lesson.

5. The culture

Mexican culture is extremely multifaceted and interesting as the country was influenced by so many different cultures over the years, from various indigenous and Mesoamerican civlizations to the Spanish Invasion. Learn from the people living in rural communities who speak  native languages in addition to Spanish, as the Mexican government recognises 68 indigenous languages!

If you are into art, go visit Frida Kahlo’s Casa Azul or Diego Rivera’s paintings, and listen to some Mariachi folk music while indulging in some local mezcal. Can you imagine a better way to spend your day?
