The Caribbean’s second largest country – the Dominican Republic – is nothing short of breathtaking when you first arrive. As you look down on it from the plane, with its bright blue waters and natural wonders, you can’t help but feel incredibly relaxed.

The country is filled with colonial architecture and history, diverse flora and fauna, as well as beautiful sceneries.

If you are a beach bum, make sure to tour all of the Dominican Republic’s beaches. Don’t forget to wander outside of Punta Cana to experience non-touristy beaches as well.

The best beaches to visit include:

  • Bávaro Beach, Punta Cana
  • Playa Dorada, Puerto Plata
  • Cayo Levantado
  • Las Galeras
  • Kite Beach, Cabarete
  • Playa Grande, Rio San Juan
  • Bahia de Las Aguilas
  • Cabarete Beach, Cabarete
  • Playa Fronton

If you are an adventurous traveller, you’ll have a lot to see and do. Go on a ziplining day trip in Punta Cana, where you soar from the top of El Farallon cliff at a speed of up to 40 miles per hour. After this, you’ll hike through the jungle and end your day swimming in the bright blue waters of the Hoyo Azul. Dreamy!

Another great adventurous activity to get your adrenaline going is the Wild Buggy Eco Adventure, which is just as fun as it sounds. You get to explore the island’s beautiful landscape in a 4×4 buggy with the help of a local guide. You get to taste local chocolate, coffee and rum as you cruise through the forest. At the end of the day trip, you get to Taino Ecological Park for a refreshing dip in a freshwater cenote, just before you head to Macao Beach.

If you still feel like you haven’t seen enough after all of these day trips, then try exploring all the magical waterfalls and natural bodies of water the Dominican Republic has to offer. With the 27 Waterfalls Damajagua tour you will travel deep into the tropical rainforest of Puerto Plata to discover a series of canyons, cascading waterfalls and natural pools. This adventure trip is perfect if you are looking to relax by the water but need a change from the beach (what a great problem to have, don’t you agree?).

If you are looking for something different to do on the island, why not visit Monkeyland? This place is exactly what it sounds like. You get to experience and interact with the curiously adorable squirrel monkeys that inhabit the area in their natural habitat. Not only that but you also get to visit a botanical garden, full of native Dominican plants and eat fresh tropical fruit straight from the trees on which they grow. It’s an unforgettable experience, but beware that since you will be dealing with wild animals, you’ll need to sign a liability waiver. Stroll through the colourful botanical garden and identifies medicinal plants, flowers and fruit trees native in the Dominican Republic.

There are so many fun things to do and places to see in this beautiful country. Have you ever been to the Dominican Republic or do you plan to?
